A Brief History
In 1879 Pastor F.J. Jungck began to travel east of his congregation of St. John's in Palmer, Kansas and began to minister to a group of German settlers in the communities of Chepstow, Bodaville, and Winkler Mills. Services were held bi-weekly in these areas until 1883 when it became feasible for the communities to form a congregation. Because of the large distance between each of the communities a consensus could not be reached as to where the church would be built so the decision was made to form two separate congregations which would be served by the same pastor; those congregations became known as St. John's Lutheran in Winkler (rural Riley county), and St. Peter's Lutheran in Chepstow (south of Barnes).
There are no definite records as to when the congregation was started, however in the meeting minutes of an August 30, 1884 meeting state that the congregation known as St. Peter's Ev. Lutheran Church had been in existence for about a year, with the first church building being dedicated later in 1895. After rapid growth in the congregation a new building was constructed and dedicated in 1903 and still stands today, with some added renovations and expansions, the most recent being done in 1982. A Christian day school was in operation from the early days of the congregation until its closure in 1942.
In 1929 St. Peter's and St. John's in Winkler seperated and each congregation called their own pastor, operating independently until 1961 when St. John's disbanded when the Tuttle Creek Dam was put in. What followed was in many ways a "family reunion" as many St. John's members returned to St. Peter's following the closing of St. John's. Today several members of St. Peter's still manage and care for the cemetery of St. John's Winkler, which is located northwest of Randolph.
The Lord of the Church has blessed St. Peter's with many generations of faithful members and faithful shepherds, and sustained this congregation with His Word and Sacraments throughout all the good times and the bad. He has been faithful to us, and we give thanks for the many blessings and gifts we have received, and look to the future of our congregation and the work we still have yet to do.
